Race Entry

What does the entry fee include?

The entry fee is used towards the logistics of planning, managing and hosting the event, however our main aim is to donate to local charities. All finishers will receive a medal, technical t-shirt, water and ice lolly.  

How do I know if my entry has worked?

You will receive a confirmation email from Active Training World confirming your registration; this can take up to 24 hours to arrive. If you do not receive this please email with your full name and date of birth.

Do I qualify for UKA Affiliated entry?

To qualify for UKA Affiliated entry, your running club must be recognised via the UKA Governing Body. We will ask you for your Competition Licence Number also known as your URN (Unique Registration Number) from your competition licence when registering.

When do entries close?

Entries will close at midday on Thursday 10th June 2021. However, please note that some races did sell out before the closing date in previous years, so we recommend registering early.  

Can I enter on the day of the event?

No, we do not accept entries on the day of the event.

I have changed address since entering, how can I change my details?

Changes to your address can be made up to 11.59pm 30th April by logging into your account on Active Training World. This link is also included on your confirmation email. If you need to change your address details after this date please contact Head Office on


What is the minimum age to enter the race?

The minimum ages all participants must be on race day are as follows;
Half Marathon – 17 years
Walking Half – 17 years
5K – 11 years
1.5 Mile Fun Run – All ages. Please note: Infants are welcome to be pushed around in a pushchair or carried but must still be registered for legal reasons. They will receive the same benefits as adults, including a finisher t-shirt. You are welcome to put their race number on the buggy if you would prefer.
Please note that there is no upper age limit for any race. 

Can I enter my whole family?

Yes families can register for the 1.5 mile fun run, unlike previous years there is no family category. To sign up a family, complete one persons registration then before processing payment you can add another participant to your transactions.

Can I push a buggy in the 1.5 Mile Fun Run?

You can push a buggy around the 1.5 Mile Fun Run but please register the child individually as both adult and child must have a race number. You can place the child’s race number on the buggy if you prefer.

Why do I have to pay for postage?

With the event increasing in size each year the charge for postage has become very high and as a charity we can no longer afford to subsidise this cost. We have decided to charge a small amount for postage this year to ensure as much money as possible can be donated to our charitable causes.

What will the payment show up as on my bank statement?

The registration fee will appear from Active Training World on your bank statement, not St Albans Half Marathon. Active Training World are the registration company we use to manage the registrations for the event.

Why have I been charged an admin fee from Active Training World?

Active Training World will charge a small administration fee for all payments. As a charity event we cannot afford to subsidise this cost for all participants.

Why do I need to enter my estimated finish time?

When registering you will be asked your expected finish time from this we will allocate you to a starting pen. Your chip-time starts when you pass under the gantry and over the chip mats so don't worry if it takes a while to get through the start. Both your gun and chip time will appear in the results.

If your estimated finish time changes you can change your entry details up to 11.59pm 15th April by logging into your account on Active Training World. This link is also included on your confirmation email. If you need to change your details after this date please contact Head Office on


Can I enter a friend?

Yes you can register and pay for a friend. You can complete both your registrations at once by adding multiple entries to your basket. You will be asked to sign the waiver on their behalf. You can also enter in different categories.

Can I pre-pay for people?

We no longer offer a pre-pay option however you can now purchase multiple entries at once. You will need the following details from each person you would like to purchase a space for;

How do I join my running club team?

When registering you will be given the option to select a running club. 

Can I register for the Corporate Challenge?

Registration for the Corporate Challenge will open in early 2021. More information will be available soon. 

Race Pack
When will I receive my race number?

This year included within your entry price is postage for your pack.

We aim to have the last packs sent out by Monday 7th June. Please ensure you enter your address correctly when registering. If your address changes please change it by logging into your account on Active Training World. The link is also included on your confirmation email. If you need to change your address after 11.59pm 6th May please contact Head Office on

If you enter after midday on Monday 7th June you will have to collect your race pack from the runners village

What happens if my race pack doesn't arrive in time?

If you don’t receive your race pack one week before the event, please email the team on and we will investigate the issue.

What should I do if I lose my race number?

Please don’t worry, just email and a member of the team will be able to assist you.

I am pre-collecting my race pack, where do I go?

Race collection will open on Sun 13th June (from 7am in Runners Village).

Can I collect a race pack for my friend?

Yes, you are able to collect a race pack for friends and family.  You need their full name, race and post code.

Route Queries and Race Regulations

Are there maps of the routes?

Maps for each race can be viewed on the race page.

Are there toilets on the route?

Yes, there are toilets situated on the route.

Is the course suitable for a wheelchair?

Yes, the course is suitable for a wheelchair.  We have a wheelchair race which will start 10 minutes before the half marathon race, so as to avoid collisions.  Please be aware that the start and finish line are both in the park and hence are on grass.  There are also hills and speed bumps on the route.  If you have any queries, please feel free to contact us on and we will be able to advise you.

Why is the walking half marathon not a race?

Due to the whole route not being closed to traffic, we're unable to make it an official race. The event is chip timed so participants can get an official time. There are also spot prizes available for 3 walkers. 

I don’t know whether to do the half marathon or walking half?

Walking events is strictly walking so suitable if you have no intention to run.
The running half marathon has a time limit of 3h 15mins so you could walk parts but you need to have the intention to jog a good percentage of it.

Are there time limits on finishing the races?

Yes, there are time limits for each race.  They are as follows:

Half Marathon: 3 hours 15 minutes
Wheelchair Half Marathon: 3 hours 30 minutes
Walking Half Marathon: 5 hours
5k: 55 minutes
Fun Run: No limit 

Can I take my dog?

Sorry, no dogs are allowed in any of the races.

How does the race start work for the Half Marathon?

You will be asked for your estimated finishing time when registering. You will then be sent further details in regards to your starting pen within your Race Pack.  This has been introduced to help prevent collisions and injuries at the start by people going quicker or slower than others. Race results are done by gun time; however your chip-time starts when you pass under the gantry and over the chip mats so don't worry if it takes a while to get through the start. Both your gun and chip time will appear in the results.

Are there pace makers?

Yes, there are pace makers for a selection of times.  

Can I run in fancy dress?

Yes, we encourage you to!  Fancy dress helps to make the race really fun for spectators, families and runners alike.  There’s even a prize for the best fancy dress, so get your thinking caps on!

Can I wear headphones?

This only applies to the Half Marathon.

The wearing of headphones, or similar devices, (other than those medically prescribed), is not permitted in races on any single carriageway roads. Under UKA rules, you are allowed to wear bone-conducting headphones. We will be allowing the use of Bone Conduction headphones ONLY for the running half marathon.

Any runner seen using any other form of headphone or who has not declared using bone conduction headphones will be disqualified. The Race Director has taken advice and in-line with current UKA rules and BARR recommendations on health and safety grounds when establishing our head phone policy. Please respect our rules, we don't have many!

Is the course fully marshalled?

Yes, we are known for our loyal, enthusiastic and encouraging marshals.  We could not run the event without the continuous support from the local voluntary organisations that help us marshal the event.

Where can I park? And are they free?

We have provided 2 free car parks for participants. There is no parking in Westminster Lodge Car Park. We advise runners/walkers to seek parking outside of Verulamium Park to avoid delays and traffic congestion.  Details of these car parks, as well as a map can be found here

Where is the nearest train station?

The nearest train station is St Albans City Train Station.  Please note that St Albans City Train Station is a 15-20 minute walk from Verulamium Park.  Taxis and buses will be in operation, but please add additional time to your journey when using these travel options.

What time can I collect my race pack on the event day?

Race number collection is available from 7am. Please make your way to the runner’s village and you will see clear sign posts to the numbers tent. If you are collecting race numbers we recommend you allow at least 45 minutes before your race starts.

Is there a pre-race warm up?

Yes, there will be a warm up led by an instructor on the stage before each race.

Are there showers and changing facilities?

Yes there are shower and changing facilities in the Abbey View building which are free for all runners to use. There are changing facilities in the runner's village.

Will there be anywhere to store my bag during the race?

Yes we have a secure baggage area available in the Runner's Village free of charge.

What time should we get there?

Participants gather at the start line 10-15 minutes before the scheduled start time. There are plenty of activities to do in the Runner's Village pre and post races so we recommend 1 hour before your event starts. 


Where can my family watch?

There are three spectator viewing places along the route, please see the map here. There are also lots of space along our finish line your family can cheer you on from.
The best view of the start/finish line will be from the VIP garden. You can buy spectator VIP passes here.

When will the results be posted?

The results will be posted on the homepage of our website within 24 hours. If you provide a mobile number within your registration, you will also be sent a text of your gun and chip time.

Who receives prizes?

Half Marathon - There will be a presentation of prizes to the Top 3 Male and Top 3 Female runners only.  Additional prizes for the categories below will be sent to runners following the event.

How much are VIP tickets?


Tickets cost £20 with children (aged 8 and under) costing £8, and children aged 2 and under go free (no ticket necessary). You can either buy your VIP ticket during registration as an additional purchase or use the "VIP ticket only" option on the registration form.

What happens on the day if I have a VIP ticket?

On arrival, please follow signs to the VIP area which will be located in between the start and finish lines on the second field.  Your VIP wristband will have been posted to the purchaser two weeks before the event.  Please ensure you are wearing this so that you can come and go as you please.  The VIP area will be open from 8am til 2pm.  We recommend you arrive early to drop your bags and soak up the atmosphere.  We also welcome you to stay after your race to enjoy the complimentary buffet and celebrate with fellow runners.

Transferring and Cancellations

What happens if I can no longer attend the event?

There are NO REFUND, DEFERRALS or TRANSFERS offered after 7 days unless the participant has purchased booking insurance. Booking insurance costs 2% of your entry fee and will offer you a full refund with proof.
Why can’t I have a refund after 7 days?

You have the right to cancel your place in any one of our events and receive a full refund (excluding admin fee) if your cancellation is notified in writing to the event team within 7 days of your entry date. After this period we regret that we cannot refund any entry fees, whether due to injury, illness, lack of training or a last minute change of plan. This is due to the entry fee being invested in the staging of the race and main costs to contractors, suppliers and administration.  These outgoings are already committed well before the event.  We apologise for any inconvenience.
